Pre Cast Concrete Panels

Below are images i took of a carpark/apartments under construction located in Melbourne on Spencer St, opposite Southern Cross Station. The building is being constructed from pre cast concrete pannels. Below are some photos I managed to take of the pre cast panels being delivered to site!

Hey Koula ....

Great Blog, very informative...

In this post, its great to actually see how they deliver the pre cast concrete. Especially for me as a Construction Management student (who hopefully be a real Construction Manager anytime in the future), I now can see that the major decisions can actually be determined by small stuff like delivery.

What I meant is, if you consider the size of the car park and think of the amount of pre cast panels they need to build the whole building and compare that with the way they deliver these panels, the cost of delivery will add up as they deliver the panels in small consignments.

As a good construction manager, I think it is wise to actually estimate the cost of alternative methods before making any decisions. An example will be using tilt up, so it will reduce the delivery cost, but unfortunately in this case, this will not be a feasible option as they don’t have any free space to cast the concrete.

To sum up, i want to emphasize that big decisions such as which material to use or what method to adopt, can actually be determined by small aspects such as ( in this case ) delivery ….

Just an insights… any comment … ? Jeremy , Rob or Lana ?

Cheers,

Edo

Hey Edo,

That's a good point you raised about delivery costs and not to mention hiring costs for the cranes. It's such a large building and only two panels can fit on a truck per delivery. This building would cost heaps and also take a long time to build too!!
